Obituary

Janilyn "Jan" Clements, 87, of Moro, Illinois died at her home on Saturday, June 28, 2025 after a long battle with cancer. She was surrounded by family members.

She was born on May 25, 1938, in St. Louis, Missouri, the daughter of Emma Ruth (Grice) and J. Ed Holt. She spent her early years in Fairfield Illinois, but later moved to Hoopeston Illinois, where her parents ran the local Western Auto. She attended Hoopeston High school, where she was a "Cornjerkers" cheerleader and where she met many of her lifelong friends. She was also a lifeguard at the local pool and she retained her love of swimming throughout her life.

Jan remembered her years as a cheerleader and lifeguard fondly. She kept in touch with her high school friends throughout her life, speaking with them often, and getting together with them as their schedules allowed.

While living in Hoopeston, she met her future husband, Irl Clements, who is from the neighboring town of Wellington, Illinois. They were married on October 13, 1957 and had 3 children.

She was also close with her step father, Sanford "Sandy" Gooden of Hoopeston Illinois. He married Emma Ruth when Jan was in her twenties and became an important part of her life and her children's.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling and visiting with friends. She was an avid reader who also enjoyed gardening, cooking and eating out at interesting places, often replicating dishes of the places where she ate. She also lived in Quincy Illinois for many years where she enjoyed boating on the Mississippi.

Jan is survived by her husband, Irl Clements, her son Brent Clements and his partner, Leona Mukai, her daughter Gina Wilper and her husband Steve Wilper, her brother Jed Holt and his spouse Nettie Holt and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, step-father and her son, Bryan Irl Clements.
